[Submit a CrimeStoppers Tip]

Background
The Crime Stoppers concept originated in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1976. By the end of 1986 over 600 organizations were formed throughout the United States and Internationally. Although each operates independently, all rely on the original formula for success; that is the commitment and cooperation of law enforcement, the media, and the public to solve felony crimes and maintain caller anonymity. Today, there are over 1,200 Crime Stoppers organizations throughout the world.

Garner Crime Stoppers, Inc., is a civilian volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created through the efforts of the Garner Police Department after hearing about the Greater Triangle Crime Stoppers program. Because of the interest of Garner Police to utilize all programs available in the reduction of crime, the Garner Crime Stoppers, Inc. program was formed.

The Board of Directors is made up of concerned citizens who actively help guide the program. They are directly responsible for all fund raising and the administration of the reward monies. The Board of Directors meets monthly to coordinate projects and review progress.

In addition to the civilian volunteer board activities, a Program Coordinator is assigned through the Garner Police Department to coordinate the activity of the board.

How does it work?
Anyone with information about a crime in Garner can call a Triangle-wide number, 919-226-CRIME (2746), and reach Garner Crime Stoppers. A police officer will answer the phone during business hours, and callers may leave messages if no one answers. Callers do not have to identify themselves. They are given a unique identifying number to remember in order to claim their reward. Callers can claim a cash reward anonymously at a cooperating bank. The amount of the reward is based on the nature of the crime and the nature of the information they provide. Persons who provide substantial information receive higher rewards. The reward will be determined by the Board of Directors for Garner Crime Stoppers, Inc.

How can you help? Garner Crime Stoppers, Inc. needs community volunteers. Crime Stoppers succeeds when concerned volunteers are willing to spend just a few hours each month meeting with the board of directors to plan future events and to decide rewards for pending cases.

We need corporate and private donations as well. No donation is too small. Your donations will provide reward money and to promote the existence of Crime Stoppers to the public.

Do you have information for us?
Crime Stoppers allows anyone to report crimes and remain anonymous. Anyone with information about a crime can call Crime Stoppers at 919-226-CRIME anytime, seven days per week, 24 hours per day.

Calls to Crime Stoppers are not recorded or traced and callers are asked to not give their names. The information received will be confidential and does not become part of any police or public record. A code number is assigned to the caller that serves as his or her identification. The caller is asked to call back in a week or two to see if the tip leads to an arrest.

If the information leads to an arrest, the recovery of narcotics, stolen property or the apprehension of a fugitive, then the caller is entitled to a cash reward.
