Is it necessary to get approval from the Planning Department before installing a permanent sign on
your property/business?
Yes. Submit a Sign Permit Application. The form has categories for three (3) types of signs: Wall sign; Freestanding Sign; and Master Sign Plan. The Unified Development Ordinance addresses permanent signs in some detail depending on the location of the business and the type of permanent sign requested.
· For Wall Signs the allowable size is based on the square foot area of the front face of the building excluding the roof, and/or restricted by the conditions of the Master Sign Plan. The form therefore requests information on the length and height of the building front, and the square footage of the proposed sign.
· For Freestanding Signs the height and size is restricted by the location of the property - i.e. whether it is on a major highway or in a shopping center - and by restrictions imposed by a Master Sign Plan. Therefore the form requests height and sign square footage information, and, in the case of the business being located in a shopping center, the signature of the design review representative.
For Freestanding Signs there must be a plant bed at the base of the sign at: half the height x the width; or a minimum of 50 square feet. If you have any questions contact the Urban Design Specialist.
